Edisto Beach Inshore Redfish and Black Drum Trip

Looking for a top-rated inshore fishing adventure that gives you plenty of time to really dial in on some serious fish? This 6-hour private charter with Captain Parker Wall puts you right in the heart of Edisto's legendary tidal creeks and salt marshes. With room for up to three anglers, you'll have the whole boat to yourselves as you work the flats aboard an 18-foot specialized flats skiff built for navigating these shallow Lowcountry waters. Whether you're bringing the family for their first taste of saltwater fishing or you're a seasoned angler looking to add some quality South Carolina reds to your logbook, this extended trip gives you the flexibility to hit multiple spots and work with the tides instead of against them.

What to Expect on the Water

Six hours might sound like a long day, but trust me – once you're out there sight-fishing for tailing redfish in knee-deep water, time flies. Captain Parker knows these creeks like the back of his hand, and he's got the patience to put beginners on fish while still keeping things interesting for experienced anglers. The extended timeframe means you're not rushing from spot to spot. Instead, you can really work an area when the fish are biting, or move around to find where they're holding when conditions change. The flats boat draws minimal water, so you'll get into places where the big boats can't go – those back-country spots where the fish feel safe and feed heavy. All your gear is included, from professional-grade rods and reels to fresh live bait, so you just need to show up ready to fish.

Techniques & Tackle

Inshore fishing in the Edisto creeks is all about reading the water and adapting your approach. You'll be using light tackle – think spinning reels with 15-20 pound braid – perfect for feeling every bump and nudge when you're working a jig along an oyster bar or drifting live shrimp under a popping cork. Captain Parker will have you rigged with circle hooks when you're using live bait, which makes catch-and-release much easier on the fish. Depending on what's happening with the tides, you might be sight-casting to cruising reds in the shallows, or anchoring up near structure to target black drum and sheepshead. The boat's trolling motor keeps things quiet when stealth matters, and the shallow draft means you can follow schools of fish right up into the grass beds where they love to ambush baitfish.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish are the crown jewel of Edisto's inshore fishery, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers patrol the grass flats and oyster bars year-round, though they're most active during the warmer months from April through October. Slot-size reds typically run 18-27 inches and put up a serious fight on light tackle. What makes them so exciting here is that you'll often see them before you cast – watching a red's back fin cutting through shallow water gets your heart pumping every single time. They're ambush predators that love to cruise the edges of grass beds, looking for crabs and shrimp, which makes them perfect targets for sight-fishing.

Black drum might not win any beauty contests, but they'll test your tackle and your patience in the best possible way. These bottom-dwellers love to hang around oyster bars and bridge pilings, using their pharyngeal teeth to crush shellfish. In Edisto's waters, you'll find them ranging from 2-pound juveniles up to massive 30-plus-pound bull drums. Spring and fall are prime time for the bigger fish, and when you hook into a 20-pounder, you'll know it immediately. They fight deep and heavy, using their broad sides to leverage against your drag.

Sheepshead are the thieves of the inshore world – masters at stealing bait right off your hook if you're not paying attention. These black-and-white striped fish have human-like teeth designed for crushing barnacles and small crabs off pilings and rocks. They're most active in cooler months, making them a great winter target when other species slow down. Landing a quality sheepshead requires finesse and quick reflexes, as they're notorious for their light bites and quick escapes. But when you connect, they're excellent table fare.

Speckled trout, or "specks" as locals call them, are probably the most cooperative fish you'll encounter on this trip. These beautiful fish with distinctive black spots love grass flats and drop-offs, especially during moving tides. They're active year-round but really turn on during spring and fall when water temperatures are in that sweet spot. Specks are perfect for beginners because they're aggressive feeders and not too picky about presentation. A well-placed soft plastic or live shrimp will usually do the trick, and they're fantastic eating if you decide to keep a few

Black Drum

Black drum are the heavyweights of our inshore waters, running anywhere from 5-30 pounds with some monsters pushing 90. These grey-black bruisers love shallow mudflats and oyster beds where they crush crabs and shellfish with powerful jaws. Spring brings the best action when they school up for spawning - that's when you'll hear their distinctive drumming sounds underwater. They're bottom feeders, so fresh crab or cut bait on the bottom is your best bet. Around Edisto, look for them on incoming tides over oyster bars. Pro tip: when you feel that subtle tap-tap, don't set the hook right away - let them take it and run a few feet first. Smaller fish under 15 pounds make great table fare with sweet, flaky meat.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish are the crown jewel of our flats with that bronze back and signature black spot near the tail. They run 20-40 inches in our waters and love super shallow areas where their backs sometimes break the surface. You'll find them cruising oyster bars, grass flats, and creek mouths year-round, though fall brings the biggest schools. What makes reds special is their aggressive nature - they'll hammer topwater plugs, soft plastics, and live shrimp with equal enthusiasm. The fight is something else too, with powerful runs that'll test your drag. Look for nervous water or tailing fish on low tide. Here's the key: when you spot one, cast well ahead of where it's moving and work your bait back into its path. They make excellent eating in the slot size range.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Speckled trout are the bread and butter of our grass flats, typically running 14-24 inches with that beautiful spotted silver body. They love shallow waters around grass beds and drop-offs, especially during moving tides. Fall and spring offer the most consistent action, but summer nights can be magic when they feed aggressively in skinny water. What guests love about specks is their willingness to hit topwater plugs and soft plastics, plus they're outstanding table fare with tender, white meat. They school up, so where you catch one, you'll usually find more. My go-to trick is working a paddle tail jig just above the grass line on an incoming tide - they can't resist that wounded baitfish action drifting over their heads.

Sea Trout

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are the "convict fish" of our waters with their black and white stripes, but don't let their looks fool you - they're some of the smartest fish around. Most run 1-8 pounds, though 20-pounders lurk around dock pilings and bridge structures. They've got human-like teeth perfect for crushing barnacles and crabs off hard surfaces. Spring months from February through April are prime time when they gather in big numbers. What makes them fun is the challenge - they're notorious bait thieves who'll steal your shrimp before you know it. Get your bait tight against structure and be ready for quick hooksets. The reward is some of the best eating fish in the water with sweet, white meat that's worth the effort to clean.
